Oral Hygiene and Cleaning

Oral hygiene is the way of prevention of cavities (dental caries), gingivitis, periodontitis, and other dental disorders. It also helps to prevent bad breath (halitosis). Oral hygiene is necessary for all persons to maintain the health of their teeth and mouth. They are clean and have minimal or no plaque deposits and therefore are more resistant to caries. Healthy gums are pink and firm.

Oral hygiene consists of both personal and professional care. Dental X-rays may be performed as part of routine professional examinations.

Regular tooth cleaning performed by the dentist or dental hygienist is important to remove plaque that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in areas that are difficult for a patient to reach on his own at home.

Professional cleaning consists of 3 steps:

1)Removing calculus by using hand and ultrasound scalers
2)“Air Flow” – a sodium solution stream with which is sending off black spots and making your teeth whiter
3)Polishing which makes your teeth smoother.

Dentists recommend having your teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months. More frequent cleaning and examination may be necessary during the treatment of many of the dental/oral disorders. Routine examination of the teeth is recommended at least every year.

We have an excellent hygiene staff trained by American Board Certified hygienist Yolanda Bass, Tucson, Arizona, who is providing top quality hygiene at American Dental Center as well.

“I love the daily challenge of providing patient care from all aspects of routine cleaning, scale and root plane; teaching patients how to practice good oral hygiene and provide other preventive dental care such as fluoride treatment and sealant. My goal is to motivate and assist patients in achieving and maintaining optimal oral health.”

Good oral hygiene which you follow evet day prevents, and is vital to the treatment of many of the dental and oral disorders. Good oral hygiene results in healthy teeth and mouth.

Simple oral Hygiene

Lots of caries-potential bacteria exist in tooth plaque. Tooth plaque is a soft film on the surface of teeth which contains bacteria and acids which cause caries. Calculus is a hardened plaque. Once calculus is generated on the tooth surface it can’t be removed by tooth brush. Your dental hygenist will do professional tooth cleaning for this purpose.

Do not forget that regular teeth brushing is the key moment of dental prophylaxis. Regular teeth brushing helps to avoid calculus production. You must also use floss to remove plaque from the spaces between teeth. But even proper tooth brushing may noy be enough to avoid calculus production totally. It depends on the individual features of your organism – saliva composition, immune state, age and other conditions – to determine how fast calculus forms. Your dentist will advise you how often it is best for you to see dental hygienist to maintain your oral health.

Our hygiene instructor Yolanda Bass will not only complete all the complex of professional care necessary for you, but also insturct you how to brush and floss teeth and help to chose the most appropriate means of dental prophylaxis for you.
